Ricovero most commonly refers to a hospital admission (ricovero ospedaliero) or to sheltered housing for the elderly (casa di ricovero). The verb ricoverare means 'to admit to hospital' or 'to shelter', and è stato ricoverato ('he was admitted to hospital') is a very common news phrasing. Do not confuse with recupero (recovery).
