Rinunziare (also spelled rinunciare) means to formally give up a right, claim, or intention. It takes the preposition a: rinunziare a un diritto ('to renounce a right'). It is conjugated with avere as auxiliary. The spelling rinunciare is now more common in standard Italian, but rinunziare remains valid, especially in legal texts.
