risentimento

resentment

noun ree-zen-tee-MEN-toh Rare

Usage Note

Risentimento denotes a lingering bitterness over a perceived wrong — closer to 'grudge' than to momentary anger. The verb is risentirsi (to feel resentful, to take offence): mi sono risentito per quella battuta (I took offence at that remark). Unlike rancore (which is deeper and more enduring), risentimento can fade more easily.

Examples

"Nutriva un profondo risentimento verso di lui."

Natural Translation

She harboured a deep resentment towards him.

Literal Translation

She-nurtured a deep resentment towards of him.
