Scalo is primarily an aviation and maritime term: a stopover or port of call. Fare scalo a Roma means to have a stopover in Rome. It also refers to a railway yard (scalo ferroviario) or a harbor wharf. Do not confuse with scala (staircase or scale). The plural scali is regular.
