Scapito appears almost exclusively in the fixed phrase a scapito di, meaning 'to the detriment of' or 'at the expense of': la velocità va a scapito della qualità (speed comes at the expense of quality). It is rarely used outside this construction. The plural scapiti exists but is uncommon.
