Scavo refers to an excavation site, most commonly an archaeological dig (gli scavi di Pompei). It can also refer to any earthwork excavation in construction. The plural gli scavi is frequently used to mean the archaeological ruins themselves, as in visitare gli scavi (to visit the ruins).
