schivo

reserved

adjective SKEE-voh Rare

Also means

shy

Usage Note

Schivo describes a person who avoids attention or social contact — reserved, retiring, or aloof rather than aggressively shy. Una persona schiva keeps to herself without being rude. It can also mean averse or reluctant to something (schivo di elogi — averse to praise). Do not confuse with schifoso (disgusting/gross), which sounds vaguely similar but is entirely different.

Examples

"È un artista schivo che evita i riflettori."

Natural Translation

He is a reserved artist who avoids the spotlight.
