Scommessa is the noun from scommettere (to bet). It refers to both a formal wager and an informal dare or gamble: fare una scommessa means 'to make a bet'. In informal speech è una scommessa can also mean something is a risky venture. Note the double 'm' — both are held in pronunciation.
