Usage Note
Sconcertante describes something that leaves you confused or thrown off, not just surprising. It is an invariable adjective in gender but agrees in number: una situazione sconcertante, comportamenti sconcertanti. Stronger than sorprendente (surprising), it implies a loss of composure or logical footing.
