Usage Note

Sigillo refers to an official wax or embossed seal used to authenticate documents, and by extension to any stamp of authority. The phrase sotto sigillo di confessione (under the seal of confession) is a fixed religious expression. The plural is regular: sigilli. Do not confuse with timbro (rubber stamp used in offices).
