Usage Note

Sirena covers both the mythological mermaid (la Sirenetta — 'The Little Mermaid') and the modern alarm siren (la sirena dei pompieri — 'the fire siren'). The plural is regular: sirene. Do not confuse with the masculine il sireno, which is a rarely used term for a merman.
