Usage Note

Sondaggio is masculine and is used for opinion polls (sondaggio d'opinione) as well as geological or underwater surveys (sondaggio del terreno). The plural is sondaggi (note the -ggi spelling). Learners should not confuse it with sondare (the verb, to probe/sound out), from which it derives.
