Sopraffare conjugates like fare (its base verb): past participle sopraffatto, e.g. è stata sopraffatta dal dolore ('she was overwhelmed by grief'). It covers both physical overpowering and emotional overwhelm. The reflexive sopraffarsi takes essere; the plain transitive takes avere.
