sovrastimare

to overestimate

verb soh-vra-stee-MAH-reh Rare

Also means

to overvalue

Usage Note

Sovrastimare takes avere as its auxiliary. It is the direct opposite of sottostimare (to underestimate). Common in finance, psychology, and everyday speech: sovrastimare le proprie capacità (to overestimate one's abilities). The past participle sovrastimato functions freely as an adjective. Spelling note: sovra- prefix (not sopra-) in this compound, though both prefixes mean 'over/above'.

Examples

"Tendiamo a sovrastimare i rischi a breve termine."

Natural Translation

We tend to overestimate short-term risks.
