sprovveduto

naive, inexperienced

adjective sprohv-veh-DOO-toh Rare

Also means

unprepared, caught off guard

Usage Note

Sprovveduto literally means 'lacking provisions' (provvisto = provided), but idiomatically it describes someone naive or ill-equipped for a situation. It is often used slightly dismissively — prendere qualcuno alla sprovvista means 'to catch someone off guard.' A persona sprovveduta is not necessarily stupid, just inexperienced or unprepared.

Examples

"Era troppo sprovveduto per quel lavoro."

Natural Translation

He was too inexperienced for that job.
