supportare

to support; to endure

verb soop-por-TAH-reh Rare

Usage Note

Supportare is a false friend for English speakers: in Italian it primarily means 'to tolerate' or 'to endure' (non supporto il caldo, I can't stand the heat), not 'to support' in the sense of backing or helping someone — for that, Italians say sostenere or appoggiare. In technical and modern usage, influenced by English, supportare is increasingly used for 'to support' a system or file format, but purists prefer supporto as a noun only.

Examples

"Non supporto il rumore durante il lavoro."

Natural Translation

I cannot stand noise while working.

Literal Translation

Not I-support the noise during the work.
