svoltare

to turn (a corner); to turn off (a road)

verb zvol-TAH-reh Rare

Usage Note

Svoltare is used for changing direction on foot or in a vehicle: svolta a destra ('turn right'), svolta al semaforo ('turn at the traffic light'). It takes avere as auxiliary. Do not confuse with voltare (to turn something over) or girare (to turn, more general). The noun svolta ('turning point' or 'turn in the road') shares the same root.

Examples

"Svolta a sinistra dopo il semaforo."

Natural Translation

Turn left after the traffic light.
