truffle
noun tar-TOO-foh Rare
Origin: From Latin 'terrae tuber' (earth tuber).

chocolate truffle
Usage Note
Tartufo refers to both the prized underground fungus (tartufo bianco from Alba, tartufo nero from Norcia) and the dome-shaped Italian ice-cream dessert coated in chocolate. The plural is tartufi. In gastronomy, 'tartufo' alone usually implies the fungus; the dessert is often called tartufo di Pizzo after its Calabrian town of origin.
