temuto

feared, dreaded

adjective teh-MOO-toh Rare

Usage Note

Temuto is the past participle of temere (to fear), used as an adjective meaning 'feared' or 'dreaded'. It carries a tone of respect mingled with apprehension — il temuto avversario (the feared opponent). It is not interchangeable with spaventoso (frightening, scary), which describes the subjective sensation of fear rather than the reputation of being feared.

Examples

"Era un avversario temuto da tutti."

Natural Translation

He was an opponent feared by all.
