Usage Note
Togato literally means 'wearing a toga' but in modern Italian it is used almost exclusively as a legal term: magistrato togato refers to a professional judge (as opposed to giudice laico, a lay judge). The expression il potere togato refers collectively to the judiciary. The feminine is togata.
