udienza

hearing

noun oo-DYEN-tsah Rare

Origin: From Latin 'audientia' (a listening), from 'audire' (to hear).

Also means

audience

Usage Note

Udienza has two main uses: a formal court hearing (udienza penale — criminal hearing) and a formal audience with a high official or the Pope (udienza papale). Neither sense refers to a general viewing or listening audience; for that, Italian uses pubblico (m) or audience (borrowed). The plural is regular: le udienze.

Examples

"L'udienza è fissata per lunedì."

Natural Translation

The hearing is scheduled for Monday.
