Velenoso derives from veleno (poison) and describes substances or animals that carry poison. Italian does not systematically distinguish between 'poisonous' (toxic when eaten) and 'venomous' (toxic when injected), so velenoso covers both. Figuratively, una lingua velenosa means a sharp, malicious tongue.
