vergognare
to be ashamed
verb ver-goh-NYAH-reh Rare
Origin: From vergogna (shame), from Latin 'verecundia'.
Also means
to feel embarrassed
Usage Note
Vergognare is almost always used reflexively: vergognarsi ('to be ashamed / to feel embarrassed'). The non-reflexive transitive form (vergognare qualcuno = to shame someone) is archaic. Compound tenses of vergognarsi use essere: mi sono vergognato/a. Vergogna! alone is an exclamation: 'Shame on you!'
Examples
"Si vergogna di aver mentito agli amici."
Natural Translation
He is ashamed of having lied to his friends.
Literal Translation
Himself he-is-ashamed of having lied to the friends.
