Usage Note
Volere is one of Italian's modal verbs and is highly irregular: voglio, vuoi, vuole, vogliamo, volete, vogliono. It takes avere as auxiliary in compound tenses when used alone, but inherits the auxiliary of the following infinitive (sono voluto andare vs ho voluto mangiare). The expression voler bene means 'to love' in a warm, non-romantic sense.
