affluire

to flow in

verb ahf-floo-EE-reh Rare

Origin: Latin affluere, to flow toward

Also means

to pour in

Usage Note

Affluire is an intransitive verb describing the flowing or streaming of people, money, or liquid toward a place. It takes essere as its auxiliary: i turisti sono affluiti means 'tourists flowed in'. Do not confuse it with the adjective affluente (affluent/wealthy) — while both come from the same Latin root, they have diverged in meaning.

Examples

"I turisti sono affluiti in città durante l'estate."

Natural Translation

Tourists flowed into the city during the summer.
