ammassare

to pile up, to mass together

verb ahm-mahs-SAH-reh Rare

Usage Note

Ammassare takes avere as its auxiliary when used transitively and can be used reflexively — ammassarsi — to mean 'to crowd together, to gather in a mass'. It implies an untidy, dense accumulation, distinguishing it from accumulare (to accumulate systematically). The double m and double s must both be held when speaking.

Examples

"La folla si è ammassata davanti al teatro."

Natural Translation

The crowd massed in front of the theater.

Literal Translation

The crowd itself is massed in-front-of the theater.
