Usage Note

Aggravare means to make a situation heavier or worse. It takes avere as its auxiliary. The reflexive aggravarsi is very common in medical contexts (le condizioni del paziente si sono aggravate = 'the patient's condition worsened'). The noun aggravante (aggravating factor) is common in legal language.
