aspettare
wait
verb ahs-peht-TAH-reh Less Common
Origin: from Latin 'aspectare', to look toward
Also means
expect
Usage Note
Aspettare takes a direct object with no preposition — aspetto l'autobus, never 'aspetto per'. The reflexive aspettarsi shifts the sense to 'to expect': me lo aspettavo ('I expected it'). It also means to be pregnant: aspetta un bambino.
Examples
"Aspetto l'autobus alla fermata."
Natural Translation
I'm waiting for the bus at the stop.
Literal Translation
I-wait the-bus at-the stop.
