Usage Note
Astenuto refers specifically to someone who abstains in a vote — in parliamentary, political, or sports refereeing contexts. The feminine is astenuta; plural astenuti. It is also the past participle of astenersi ('to abstain'), so context determines whether it is a noun or adjective.
Examples
"Ci sono stati tre astenuti nel voto finale."
Natural Translation
There were three abstentions in the final vote.
