astronomico

astronomical

adjective ah-stroh-NOH-mee-koh Rare

Also means

astronomically high (figurative)

Usage Note

Astronomico is used both technically (distanza astronomica = astronomical distance) and colloquially to mean an absurdly large amount, as in un prezzo astronomico (an astronomical price). Like most Italian adjectives ending in -ico, the masculine plural is astronomici, not astronomicos. The stress falls on the antepenultimate syllable.

Examples

"Il costo del progetto è astronomico."

Natural Translation

The cost of the project is astronomical.
