Also means
to knock down
Usage Note
Atterrare primarily means 'to land' (of aircraft): l'aereo atterrerà tra un'ora. In a physical or fighting context it means 'to knock someone to the ground'. The intransitive sense (landing) takes essere as auxiliary; the transitive sense (knocking down) takes avere.
Examples
"L'aereo è atterrato in anticipo."
Natural Translation
The plane landed early.
