auspicio
omen; auspice
noun ah-OOS-pee-choh Rare
Origin: Latin auspicium, from avis 'bird' + specere 'to look'
Also means
wish, hope (formal)
Usage Note
Auspicio originally referred to the Roman practice of reading omens from birds (aves). Today it survives mainly in the formal expression sotto gli auspici di ('under the auspices of'). The plural auspici is far more common than the singular. Avoid using it in casual conversation — augurio is the everyday word for 'wish.'
Examples
