becco

beak

noun BEK-koh Rare

Also means

burner tip, nozzle

Usage Note

Becco primarily means a bird's beak, but colloquially non aprire becco (don't open your beak) means 'don't say a word'. It also denotes a gas burner tip or a spout on a vessel. The plural is becchi. A false friend warning: becco does NOT mean 'beck' (a small stream) in English.

Examples

"Il picchio usa il becco per forare il legno."

Natural Translation

The woodpecker uses its beak to drill wood.
