Usage Note
Bilaterale is chiefly used in formal, diplomatic, or medical language (accordo bilaterale = bilateral agreement; ernia bilaterale = bilateral hernia). It is invariable in gender (un accordo bilaterale, una trattativa bilaterale) but changes for number (bilaterali). Its opposite is unilaterale.
