Calce has two distinct meanings depending on context: in construction it means quicklime or whitewash (muro di calce — 'lime-washed wall'); in typography and documents, a piè di pagina or in calce means 'at the foot of the page,' i.e., a footnote or signature line. The two senses are related only by the Latin sense of 'heel/bottom.'
