camino

fireplace

noun kah-MEE-noh Rare

Origin: Greek kaminos 'furnace, oven'

Also means

chimney

Usage Note

Camino can mean both the fireplace (the hearth in a room) and the chimney (the flue stack on the roof) — context distinguishes them. Accendere il camino means to light the fireplace; il fumo esce dal camino means the smoke comes out of the chimney. Do not confuse with cammino (journey, path), which has a double m.

Examples

"Ci siamo seduti vicino al camino."

Natural Translation

We sat down near the fireplace.

Literal Translation

Ourselves we-are seated near to-the fireplace
