Usage Note

Candidare is regularly used reflexively as candidarsi — 'to stand as a candidate, to run (for office)': candidarsi alle elezioni (to run in the elections). The reflexive takes essere as its auxiliary. The related noun is il/la candidato/a (candidate). Do not confuse with the English 'to candid' — there is no such verb in Italian.
