cassonetto

dumpster

noun kahs-soh-NET-toh Rare

Origin: Diminutive of cassone (large box), from cassa (chest), Latin capsa.

Also means

large waste bin

Usage Note

Cassonetto is the standard Italian word for the large wheeled rubbish container found on city streets; it is not the same as a small household bin (pattumiera). Italian cities often color-code cassonetti by waste type: grey for mixed waste, yellow for plastics, blue for paper. The plural cassonetti is used in most urban contexts.

Examples

"Porta i rifiuti al cassonetto fuori."

Natural Translation

Take the rubbish to the dumpster outside.
