Usage Note
Contempo is almost exclusively used in the fixed phrase nel contempo or nel medesimo contempo, meaning 'at the same time' or 'meanwhile.' It is a formal or literary synonym of nello stesso tempo and contemporaneamente. Outside this phrase it is rare.
