convivenza
cohabitation
noun kon-vee-VEN-tsah Rare
Origin: From Latin conviventia, from convivere (to live together); con- (together) + vivere (to live).
Also means
living together; coexistence
Usage Note
Convivenza covers both the concrete sense of people sharing a home (una convivenza di tre anni, three years living together) and the abstract sense of peaceful coexistence between groups or nations. In Italian law, convivenza di fatto (de facto cohabitation) has legal recognition since 2016 (the Cirinnà law). Do not confuse with vita in comune, which is a looser phrase.
Examples
"La convivenza tra le due culture è difficile ma possibile."
Natural Translation
Coexistence between the two cultures is difficult but possible.
