Credere takes avere as its auxiliary (ho creduto) and is followed by a when meaning 'to believe in something/someone' (credo a lui = 'I believe him') or in for abstract belief (credo in Dio). Followed by che + subjunctive when expressing opinion: credo che sia vero ('I think it's true'). Do not confuse credere with fidarsi ('to trust').
