Crosta covers several senses: the hard outer layer of bread (la crosta del pane), the scab on a wound, and — as slang — a poor-quality painting or a daub. The geological term crosta terrestre means Earth's crust. Plural: croste. Do not confuse with crostino (a small toast/crouton), which is a diminutive.
