crudo

raw

adjective KROO-doh Rare

Origin: From Latin crudus (raw, uncooked).

Also means

crude

Usage Note

Crudo primarily means uncooked (pesce crudo, raw fish) but extends figuratively to mean harsh or blunt (una verità cruda, a harsh truth). Do not confuse with freddo (cold) — Italian crudo does NOT mean cold; this is a false friend for learners coming from Spanish (crudo in some Spanish dialects means cold or hungover). The feminine form is cruda, plural crudi / crude.

Examples

"Il sushi si prepara con pesce crudo freschissimo."

Natural Translation

Sushi is made with very fresh raw fish.

Literal Translation

The sushi itself prepares with fish raw very-fresh.
