Diluvio evokes both the biblical Great Flood (il Diluvio Universale) and any overwhelming deluge of rain. By extension it means an overwhelming quantity: un diluvio di critiche ('a flood of criticism'). The plural i diluvî or i diluvi is rare; the word usually appears in the singular.
