Usage Note

Discostare is a reflexive verb most commonly used as discostarsi (to distance oneself, to diverge). The reflexive form takes essere as its auxiliary: si è discostato dalla norma (he deviated from the norm). Non-reflexive discostare (to move something away) takes avere.
