divorare

to devour

verb dee-voh-RAH-reh Rare

Origin: From Latin 'devorare', from 'de-' + 'vorare' (to swallow).

Also means

to gobble up

Usage Note

Divorare is a regular -are verb taking avere as its auxiliary. Beyond its literal meaning of eating greedily, it is widely used figuratively: divorare un libro (to devour a book — read it eagerly) or divorare la strada (to eat up the miles). Do not confuse with divorzio (divorce) — different root entirely.

Examples

"Il bambino ha divorato tutta la pizza."

Natural Translation

The child devoured all the pizza.
