noun dee-VOR-tsyoh Rare
Origin: From Latin divortium, from divertere (to turn apart).
Usage Note
Divorzio is masculine: il divorzio. Italy only legalised divorce in 1970, making the term culturally significant. The verb divorziare (to divorce) takes essere: hanno divorziato ('they divorced'). Chiedere il divorzio means 'to file for divorce'.

Natural Translation
They announced their divorce after twenty years of marriage.
