Dolore is masculine (il dolore, plural i dolori). It covers both physical pain (dolore alla schiena = back pain) and emotional grief (il dolore della perdita = the grief of loss). The adjective is doloroso. A useful idiom: è un dolore colloquially means 'it's a real pain' (a nuisance). Do not confuse with male (general illness/badness): ho mal di testa vs sento dolore (I feel pain).
