Duplice is a formal or literary synonym for doppio; it appears most often in the phrase a duplice scopo ('for a twofold purpose'). Unlike doppio, it does not change form for masculine/feminine — only duplice (singular) and duplici (plural). It is never used in everyday casual speech.
