duramente

harshly

adverb doo-RAH-men-teh Rare

Also means

hard (work hard)

Usage Note

Duramente is formed from duro (hard/harsh) + -mente, the standard Italian adverb suffix. It covers both physical hardship (lavorare duramente = to work hard) and emotional or verbal severity (criticare duramente = to criticise harshly). Unlike English 'hardly' (= scarcely), duramente never means 'barely' — that would be appena or quasi.

Examples

"Ha lavorato duramente per tutta la vita."

Natural Translation

She worked hard her whole life.
